What languages does the SCADAPack speak?
SCADAPack PLCs “speak” a number of languages or protocols. These protocols allow a master to request data from a slave or conversely send data to the slave. Communication protocols are analogous to the different languages spoken by humans. In order for communication to succeed, all parties must be speaking the same language. In the case of SCADA systems, communicating devices must utilize the same protocol.
SCADAPack PLCs support a number of protocols including Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII, DNP, DF1, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU and ASCII in TCP and Modbus RTU and ASCII in UDP.
Due to the independent-operation nature of the SCADAPack PLC’s serial and Ethernet ports, each port can be designated to use different protocols. This means, for example, that a SCADAPack PLC, with three serial ports, can communicate with DNP on the first port, Modbus RTU on the second and DF1 on the third. This greatly increases the possible system configurations supported by Control Microsystems equipment.
